Émile Boudier (1828-1920) Icones Mycologicae ou Iconographie des Champignons de France principalement Discomycetes avec texte descriptif. Paris: Paul Klincksieck, [1904]-1905-1910. 4 volumes including 3 volus. plates, large 4° (317 x 242mm). Contents of plate volumes mounted on guards throughout, half-titles, 4pp. subscribers' list inscribed at end by author (as called-for). Mounted heliogravure portrait of the author, 600 lithographic plates, printed in colours, by A. Lasne after Boudier, printed by E. Marchizet. (Occasional light spotting to about 20 plates.) Contemporary green morocco-backed marbled boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, t.e.g. (light scuffing to leather on upper cover of text volume). Provenance : L. Pericat (Tours, bookseller, see limitation leaves). A VERY RARE WORK WITH FINE PLATES AND ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE KNOWN MUSHROOMS AND FUNGI OF FRANCE: no copy is listed as having sold at auction in the past 25 years. According to the subscribers' list the edition was limited to 115 copies, this copy number 86 printed for "Pericat L., librairie, Tours". However, Stafleu & Cowan record that the text was limited to 200 copies, and the plates (which were originally issued in 30 livraisons) to 250 copies (livraisons 1-5) or 125 copies (livraisons 6-30). Each plate includes views of a number of examples of the species described, a cross-section when appropriate, and accompanying enlarged drawings of spores, gills, mycelia, etc. The text includes a scientific description of each species, notes on their edibility, rarity, habitat and ends with a detailed key to the corresponding plate. In addition to being awarded a number of scientific honours, Boudier was made a member of the Légion d'honneur in recognition of the importance of the present work.
