(early 17th-century initials at foot of title of first work). FIRST EDITION of two Ciceronian studies and an attack on the slavish cult of Ciceronianism by the scholar-printer Henri Estienne. Schreiber says of them (I) 'Henri Estienne's first original work, and very rare, consisting of a Greek-Latin lexicon of words, phrases, and expressions borrowed from the Greek by Cicero, and translated by him in his writings. The second part consists of all the Greek texts, with Cicero's parallel Latin translations'. (II) 'Rare collection of textual comments and corrections to the text of Cicero, made by the young Henri Estienne "partly from his own skill, partly from a very ancient and correct manuscript"'. (III) 'Henri shows that the Ciceronians are all the more foolish in that they slavishly imitate a model (Cicero) whose text has been corrupted by centuries of ignorance'. Adams S1755, 1778 & 1787; Schreiber 143, 144 & 199.
