With half-title and final colophon leaf. Contemporary blue calf, spine gilt, marbled edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance : Institute of Actuaries (bookplate; inscribed 'given to the Equitable Life March 1949'). FIRST EDITION, expounding the author's ideas on cheaper life assurance. Founder of the Economic Life Assurance Society, designed to transact life assurance business at lower rates than other offices, Farren went on to write an Essay on the Varieties in Mania exhibited by the Characters of Hamlet, Ophelia, Lear and Edgar (1833) and The Mortalities of Celebrated Musicians (1834) among other more abstract works.
