FENELON, François de Salignac de la Mothe (1651-1715). Les Aventures de Télémaque . Paris: L'Imprimerie de Monsieur (Didot), 1785. 2 volumes, 2° (340 x 252mm). Printed on papier vélin . Letterpress half-titles, engraved portrait after Vivien by St. Aubin, original drawing of royal coat-of-arms (printed as woodcut on title), engraved half-title and additional engraved title dated 1773, 24 engraved chapter summaries with tailpiece, and 72 engraved plates by Tilliard after Monnet, 66 of which are avant lettres . (Occasional light spotting.) 18th-century French dark blue straight-grained morocco, gilt roll-tooled border to sides, small tools on pointillé ground in spine compartments, magenta silk liners with gilt dentelle, vellum flyleaves, gilt edges, by Bozerian jeune, signed at foot of spine (very slightly scuffed at extremities, small cracks at joints.) Provenance : R. Descamps-Scrive (booklabel, catalogue 1925, no.130); Henri Beraldi (catalogue 1934, no.80); Aimé Laurent (booklabel); Henri Bonnasse (booklabel). This edition was published to accompany the suite of plates by Monnet and Tilliard. The present copy contains 66 PLATES BEFORE LETTERS; the plates for the first 2 chapters were only ever printed with letters. Also laid into the volume are 4 states of a portrait of Fenelon by Vivien: a small original drawing, and plates in 3 states engraved by Gaucher, formerly in the collection of Henri Beraldi (stamp on verso of each).
