Pulpeuse et gorgée de soleil, cette nature morte de Botero est une invitation à la caresse au pays de cocagne. D'elle s'exhale la fraîcheur légère d'un matin embaumé de gourmandise. Les fruits charnus sont autant de promesses de sapidité, que le peintre agence en une minutieuse mise en scène en les déposant délicatement sur la table, selon leurs formes légèrement enflées ou girondes. La fleur de sanguine vient tendrement rendre le velouté de ces pommes, poires et bananes appétissantes, laissant le reflet de la lumière effleurer leur peau juteuse.
Son appétence pour l'art figuratif, de même que son goût jubilatoire pour la forme et la dilatation des volumes est un paradigme très audacieux à une époque où l'abstraction puis le minimalisme règnent. Avec l'élégance qui sied à la simplicité, l'artiste se concentre sur son art et ses convictions. « L'introduction du volume fut la cause ou, disons, la révolution la plus importante qu'ait connu l'art. Each fleshy fruit promises a tasty surprise; the painter has meticulously staged them, arranging them delicately on the table according to their plump shapely curves. The red chalk tenderly renders the silky sheen of these appetizing apples, pears and bananas, as the light gently grazes their juicy skin.
His penchant for figurative art, as well as his taste for exuberant forms and expanding volumes is a very audacious paradigm at a time when abstraction and later minimalism reign. With the elegance that befits simplicity, the artist focuses on his art and his convictions. "The introduction of volume was the cause or, let's say, the most important revolution in art. Namely creating, on a flat surface, the illusion of spatiality, of the existence of things in volume," he said. Botero's works are now collected by the most important institutions and belong to the most beautiful private collections.
