Patent of Nobility and Grant of Arms for Herman Grau von Grauenfels, document signed, in German, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM Vienna, 23 August 1893 2° (375 x 285mm). 4 leaves, title with elaborate engraved heraldic border bearing the Imperial arms and allegorical figure of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, text in black ink in a gothic bookhand, with rubrics and large initials in liquid gold, red, blue and green, with accompanying scrolling penwork decoration in gold, each leaf with full-page engraved heraldic and foliate border, full-page coat of arms of the Grau family, interleaved with tissue guards. Contemporary purple velvet, the upper cover with gilt-stamped Imperial arms with blind-stamped framed border, white watered silk liners (slight wear, split a foot of spine), red wax Imperial seal in round brass case (120mm diameter), pendant on yellow and silver thread cord. A fine decorative document signed by Emperor Franz Joseph and countersigned by his Prime Minister Eduard Taafe, in favour of Hermann Grau von Grauenfels, born in 1846 in Amorbach, Bavaria; his family is granted nobility following his thirty years of distinguished military service.
