FRANZ JOSEF I, Emperor of Austria (1830-1916). Illuminated document signed by the emperor, countersigned by Count Eduard Taffee, Interior Minister, a Patent of Nobility and Grant of Arms for Joseph Gaigg, Vienna, 24 November 1870. 6 pages, 369 x 290 mm. (14¾ x 11¼ in.), ON FINE PARCHMENT, written in German in a fine Gothic script, headings in burnished gold, full-page hand-colored coat of arms (shield with castle on rocky peak against sky-blue background, surmounted by a pair of elaborately flourished knight's helms, one embellished with upraised blue wings, the other a collared dog), each page with finely engraved borders, bound in burgundy velvet, arms of the Emperor on the cover silk endpapers. Very fine condition. In giltwood frame . SEAL: The Royal seal of Emperor Franz Josef, in orange-red wax (diameter 102 mm. (4 in.), a shield device on a two-headed eagle with claws clutching a sword and an orb, a crown suspended above), in two-piece gilded brass protective case (cover with a device similar to seal, with flanking griffons), pendant on a braided cord of gold thread. A particularly fine late example of this traditional form of document.
