Beschreibung:

Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916) Secretarial Letter Signed, Vienna, 11 October 1875. Three pages inscribed on a folio-format wove bifolium. To an unnamed "Royal Highness," perhaps Louis III, Grand Duke of Hesse (1806-1877) concerning the repatriation of nuns from the convent in Mainz in Austria. Franz Joseph notes that the sisters could set up schools for young girls to advantage, but the government would not be able to support them, so that, were they to come to Austria, they must enter with the permission of the Minister of Education, become citizens, prove their means of independent subsistence and their ability to teach. Old folds, slightly toned, in a neat hand, blotchy on blank verso of last leaf, 11 1/4 x 8 1/2 in.
