Venice: Aldine Press, January 1521. Aldine 8 (157 x 93mm). Greek type 4:79. Aldine dolphin-and-anchor device 6 on title, repeated on final verso. 30 lines and headline. Initial spaces with guide-letters. (Some light browning.) French 18th-century blue straight-grained morocco by Bozerian, signed at foot of spine, sides with grape-vine roll, spine gilt with pointill ground, ivory silk pastedowns and endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance : P.A. Hanrott (19th-century sale notice tipped-in naming Hanrott); Charles Butler, of Warren Wood, Hatfield (booklabel). A fine copy of the second Aldine edition. According to Renouard, Aldus had used his own annotated copy of Janus Lascaris's 1494 editio princeps as exemplar for his first edition of 1503 and continued his revisions after it was published; rather later, Franciscus Asulanus added his notes in the volume, which is described in Renouard's private library catalogue II 129, and re-edited it for the present edition of 1521. However, in the BNF Henri II's copy of the ed. pr. (CIBN A-410, Rs Yb. 484) also contains autograph manuscript marginalia attributed to Asulanus, as well as earlier notes in a hand tentatively identified as that of Arsenios Apostolis, the editor of Theodorus Prodromus's poem Galeomyomachia (printed by Aldus ca. 1495).
