HANCOCK, JOHN, President of the Continental Congress , Signer (Massachusetts). Autograph free frank ("Congress Baltimore John Hancock " with flourish), AS PRESIDENT OF CONGRESS, on integral address leaf (letter not present) addressed "To Joseph Trumbull Esq. Commissary General &c," Baltimore, [27 December 1776], 1 page, folding to 90 x 175mm. (3 1/2 x 6 7/8 in.), recipient's endorsement, two seal holes to verso. Very fine. A choice Hancock free frank. Congress had left Philadelphia and reconvened in Baltimore in December. After being elected President of the Massachusetts Provisional Congress, Hancock served in the Continental Congress from 1775 until 1780 and as President during the very eventful period of May 1775 to October 1777 and from November 1785 until June 1786. Hancock's letter, originally sent under this cover, is published ( Letters of the Delegates to Congress , ed. Smith, et al, vol. 5, p. 679); it concerned the critical supplies of rice and flour needed for the Continental Army.
