HANCOCK, John, President of Congress, Signer (Massachusetts) . Partly printed document signed twice ("John Hancock") as Governor of Massachusetts, 4 June 1791. HANCOCK'S SALARY AS GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS An order to pay Hancock's salary: "You are by and with Advice and Consent of Council, ordered and directed to pay unto His Excellency John Hancock Esq. Governor of this Commonwealth the Sum of Two hundred pounds in full for one quarters Salary commencing the 25th of May & ending 25th August 1791 agreeable to establishment." The document is countersigned by John Avery and Alex Hodgdon, the Secretary and the Treasurer. In 1780, the year Hancock gave up his seat in Congress, he was overwhelmingly elected the first governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1780-85). He again sat in Congress 1785-86, was re-elected Governor, and still held that office at his death in 1793 at the age of 56.
