Hans Jacob Scheller [Butterflies and plants of Surinam] - Original watercolour drawings, [c. 1794 or 1795]. 6 original pencil and watercolour drawings (image area: 183 x 290mm. and smaller), with gum arabic, heightened with body colour, each within the artist's black-lined grey wash border, all signed, three dated, in ink at foot of each drawing. Framed and glazed. A fine selection of original drawings of the exotic flora and lepidoptera of central America: each image includes views of the insects with various juvenile stages on the appropriate food plants. The food plants featured include Genipa americana ; Clusia rosea ; Aristolochia hirsuta ; Justicia longiflora ; Solanum spinosum and Annona montana (all species found in Central and South America. The only published work by Scheller appears in Jan Sepp's Natuurlijke Historie van Surinaamsche Vlinders, naar het leven geteekend (Amsterdam: 1828-1855), which was based on drawings and notes prepared for Governor J.G. Wichers by Scheller. Scheller's original manuscript is in the library of the Nederlandsche Entomologische Vereenigang at The Hague. The present selection of drawings do not match any of the engravings in the published work, but appear to have been completed as part of the same project. (6)
