Lot of 50. A collection of ephemera and correspondence belonging to Henry Harrison (ca 1844-1923), an artist and amateur astronomer from Newark, NJ. Perhaps best known for his official portraits of nineteenth-century New Jersey politicians, Harrison also extensively studied and painted the moon, publishing a collection of his lunar images in 1880. He was born in Nottingham, England in around 1844 and relocated to the United States in 1852. Shortly after his arrival, Harrison studied drawing for four years at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Census records indicate that Harrison subsequently worked as an artist for many years, exploring both painting and printmaking. Highlights include Harrison's A Hand-Book, Describing Objects in the Telescopic Pictures of the Moon. New York, NY: 1880. 24pp. 5.875 x 9 in. Supplement to Harrison's painted series of progressive images of the moon in different phases. Chromolithographic reproductions were sold to subscribers for thirty dollars, which also ensured the receipt of accompanying outline drawings and this booklet. Contains the names, sizes, and detailed descriptions of each lunar phase represented in the series. Among the ephemera related to Harrison's studies at the Cooper Union are two pencil drawings of a dog and a horse, both signed "H. Harrison," as well as a signed letter from President Peter Cooper and Constantin Herzberg, a drawing instructor, attesting to Harrison's talent as a draughtsman. Letter dated December 22, 1862, 1p, written on embossed letterhead reading "Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art." Additionally contains several letters Harrison received from nineteenth-century academics and astronomers, both American and European, including Henry Draper (pioneering astrophotographer), Wilhelm J. Foerster (Director of the Berlin Observatory), Mark W. Harrington (Director, Ann Arbor Astronomical Observatory), Richard Proctor (early cartographer of Mars), and Lewis M. Rutherfurd (astrophysicist and celestial photographer). Also with ten photographs of Harrison and his family members.
