Hiram Dwight Torrey (American, 1820-1900) Fishermen at Daybreak Signed and dated "H.D. Torrey 1856" l.l., label from McClees Gallery, Philadelphia, on verso. Oil on canvas, 14 1/8 x 20 in. (36.0 x 51.0 cm), in a period giltwood frame. Condition: Two small tears in center of canvas, yellowed varnish. N.B. Hiram Dwight Torrey was born in New Lebanon, New York, in 1820, but little is known about his career or education. He taught painting at the Washington Female Seminary, Pennsylvania, from 1847 to 1850. He and his wife relocated to Milwaukee where he taught and had a studio. In the July 3, 1851 edition of the Milwaukee Sentinel, the editor, after visiting Torrey's studio, noted "landscapes, hunting pieces and other paintings," among the artist´s works. Torrey returned to Pennsylvania in 1853 and in 1856--the same year this work was painted and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Torrey married for a second time in 1862, and had a son who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1870. The only painting to come to market is Indians in a Wooded Landscape, an oil on canvas that achieved $25,850 in 2003.
