La Rihla d’Ibn Battuta est restée Inconnue en dehors du monde musulman jusqu’au début du 19e siècle, lorsque le voyageur-explorateur allemand Ulrich Jasper Seetzen acquit une collection de manuscrits au Moyen-Orient, parmi lesquels une version abrégée du texte d’Ibn Juzayy. Trois extraits ont été publiés en 1818 par l’orientaliste allemand Johann Kosegarten. Les chercheurs français ont été alertés de la publication initiale par une longue revue publiée dans le Journal de Savants par l’orientaliste Silvestre de Sacy. Le voyageur suisse Johann Burckhardt a acquis un exemplaire d’un manuscrit abrégé et l’a légué à l’Université de Cambridge. C’est ce texte arabe qui est traduit ici en anglais par l’orientaliste Samuel Lee. Les manuscrits acquis par la BNF de Paris après l’occupation française de l’Algérie ont servi à l’édition du texte arabe et sa traduction en français à partir de 1853 par Sanguinetti Defrémery qui ont loué les annotations de Lee.
