Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, the flat spine tooled in silver with a border of a decorative roll, four lines of lettering towards the head of spine, a coat-of-arms about a third of the way down and 'CE' monogram about two-thirds of the way down, marbled edges (tooling oxidized to black and faded). VERY FINE COPY OF THIS VERY RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE ANNUAL BOOK PRODUCTION OF A COUNTRY, presented under the banner of 'Bibliographia', here used for the first time in the sense it has retained to the present day. It records the annual output of the Parisian publishers and printers from 1643 to 1653 in five volumes and that of the provincial houses from 1643 to 1646, and 1651-1653 in four volumes, three of which also include Parisian books, which in the first (1646) are listed separately, but in the other two (1651 and 1652/3) are integrated, for practical reasons, with the provincial ones. Father Jacob's brilliant achievement is the subject of an excellent essay by Louis-Noëlle Malclès: 'Le Fondateur de la bibliographie nationale en France, le R.P. Louis Jacob de Saint-Charles (1606-1670)' in: Mélanges d'histoire du livre offert à Frantz Calot , 1960. Comparatively little is known about Jacob who wrote another much appreciated work Traicté des plus belles bibliothèques , 1644. Born in Chalon-sur-Saone as the son of an Italian from Sienna, he became a Carmelite in 1625, and successively librarian to Jean-François-Paul de Gondi, the future Cardinal d Retz and the Président Achille de Harlay. A disciple and friend of Gabriel Naudé, he assisted him on the open days of Mazarin's library coping with the frequently distinguished readers. 'The Carmelite Jacob died a bookman's death by falling from his library ladder' (Breslauer & Folter 55). Pollard is mistaken in taking Jacob at his word who had announced in the preface to vol. III, 1649, of the 'Parisina', that he would give up further work on the series; all further volumes have dedications to various eminent persons by
