JAMES I (1566-1625), King of Great Britain (JAMES VII of Scotland)]. Manuscript document with royal seal, ELEVATING THOMAS BISHOP to the rank of Baron, 24 July 1620. 1 page, 246 x 301 mm. (29 x 34½ in.), ON FINE PARCHMENT, written in Latin in a chancery script, WITH FINE PEN-WORK DECORATION , the first line of text with engrossed majuscules, large initial "J" enclosing a portrait of the king holding a scepter; upper margin elaborately decorated with a unicorn bearing a banner, a tudor rose, a lyre and a fleur de lis; abraded, light stains affecting some text, decoration and portrait, tear at one fold and marginal damage, folded several times to display only a portion of the document, felt-lines compartment for seal, in a walnut frame. SEAL: Great seal of James I, in brown wax ( diameter 148 mm. (5 7/8 in.) , obverse a detailed depiction of the enthroned king holding scepter, flanked by the arms of Great Britain, a crowned lion and horse, banners, and Greek columns), pendant on a pink and white plaited cord, IN VERY FINE CONDITION. A FINE IMPRESSION OF THE GREAT SEAL OF JAMES I. The son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Henry, Lord Darnley, James ruled England from 1603-1625 and Scotland from 1567-1625; he was noted for his opposition to Parliament over revenue issues and strong stands against Puritanism and Catholicism. He lent his name to the important new recension of the Bible in English, published by a team of scholars in 1611.
