JEFFERSON, THOMAS, and JAMES MADISON, Presidents . Engraved document jointly signed ("Th:Jefferson" as President and "James Madison" as Secretary of State), New Bedford, Mass., 17 August 1802. One page, folio , ON PARCHMENT, engraved [by E. Savage], calligraphic text at top, "By the President of the United States of America," beneath a large vignette of a fully rigged ship and a lighthouse on a rocky isle, with more ships and a city in background, scalloped edge at top, a few small holds at fold intersections, one lower corner torn slightly, slight darkening along folds , accomplished in manuscript ( ink slightly faded ), A SHIP'S PASSPORT for the vessel Hanover , mounting no guns and manned by a crew of 25 men, ordering the ship to be allowed "to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestations...." A FINE, LARGE AND CLEAR JEFFERSON SIGNATURE.
