JEFFERSON, THOMAS and JAMES MADISON, Presidents . Manuscript document jointly signed ("Th:Jefferson" as President and "James Madison" as Secretary of State), Washington, D.C., 13 August 1804. One page, oblong folio, integral blank, reinforced along fold lines from verso, original paper seal of the United States of America in lower left-hand portion, light browning, small losses at several fold intersections just catching a few letters of text; integral blank with five-line docket. A Presidential appointment of a member of the Legislative Council for the newly acquired Lousiana territory. In bold letters at top the document reads: "Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States of America," and certifies that the appointment is made "in pursuance of the Act of Congress entitled 'An act erecting Louisiana into two territories and providing for the temporary Government thereof,'" Benjamin Morgan is named a member of the Legislative Council and empowers to fulfil the duties of the office. An early Lousiana territory appointment.
