It includes a photographic portrait of Gould as well as an intimate and touching biography which relates the story of how Sharpe and Gould became acquainted while the former was "a boy careering about the neighbourhood of Cookham in search of birds". Sharpe went on to state "No one has excelled Mr. Gould in his appreciation of bird-life. He was in every way a born ornithologist and knew and loved the birds."
