Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945)
Two autograph letters and two autograph postcards signed (‘Käthe Kollwitz’) to Annemarie von Jakimow-Kruse, n.p. [Berlin], 1927-1938
In German. 9 pages, various sizes (150 x 105mm postcard to 181 x 146mm bifolium), one postcard bearing a signed facsimile self-portrait, one letter with a postscript by her husband Karl Kollwitz. Provenance: J.A. Stargadt, 24 & 25 February 1981, lot 537.
A glimpse of the Berlin art world of the 1920s and 30s: letters to the artist Annemarie von Jakimow-Kruse. In the letter of 1927, Kollwitz reports on a visit to her correspondent’s current exhibition. She is happy not to be on the jury because she doubts that she would have had much influence, and she finds it unpleasant when the works which one enjoys most are not selected. The second letter, dated 12 January 1933, contains a postscript by Kollwitz’s husband, Karl Kollwitz, referring to the recipient's book ‘about Russia’ (probably Zwischen zwei Stürmen: Erinnerungen aus Russland, published serially 1929-1930). The postcard of 1938 contains a short message in which Kollwitz states how much she would love for Jakimow-Kruse to visit her in Berlin, and to show the recipient’s husband her new latest works. A second, undated postcard bears a facsimile of a 1937 self-portrait, signed by the artist: 'Käthe Kollwitz greets her dear Annemarie’.
