LECLERC, Jean (1560-1621). Theatre geographique du royaume de France contenant les cartes & descriptions particulieres des provinces d'iceluy. Paris: Jean LeClerc 1626. 2° (420 x 280 mm). 48 double-page engraved maps, one hand-colored (tiny worm hole affecting most maps at inner margin, 3 maps affected by a small worm track). Contemporary calf, central gilt coat-of-arms with border of gilt double fillet, gilt edges (rebacked, portions of old spine laid down, rubbed, arms erased). Provenance : Don Gassard Guzman ? (effaced coat-of-arms on binding). Fifth edition. “Maurice Bouguereau produced the first national atlas of local French cartography. It consists of general maps (varying from one to three in different copies) and 15 maps of French provinces. They were engraved by Tavernier. For 3 of the maps, Blaisois, Touraine and Limousin, it is the first printed representation” (Tooley, p. 40). Leclere acquired the plates and printed the maps in 1619/20 with 23 additional maps and in 1626 with a total number of 48. Pastoureau Leclerc E 1626; Tooley, p. 40.
