LESNÉ, Mathurin-Marie (1777-1841). La reliure, poëme didactique en six chants . Paris: Gillé for Lesné and Nepveu, 1820. 8 o (198 x 120 mm). FINELY BOUND BY THE AUTHOR: blue straight-grained morocco, gold-tooled and blind borders on sides, spine gold-tooled in compartments (signed at foot), decorated turn-ins, gilt edges, (back joint somewhat worn). Cloth folding case. Provenance : Maurice Escoffier (bookplate) -- Marcellus Schlimovic (bookplate, red stamps of the Sociedad Hebraica Argentina). FIRST EDITION of an extraordinary bookbinding craft manual in the form of heroic couplets, with historical and technical notes in prose. This copy is bound with: T.F. Dibdin's Lettre trentième concernant l'imprimerie et la librairie de Paris , translated and annotated by G.A. Crapelet (Paris: 1821); Lesné's Lettre d'un relieur français à un bibliographe anglais (Crapelet, 1822); and Lesné's two-leaf prospectus for his "reliures à bordures typographiques" (1835). Although his fame rests on several vigorous defenses of French bookbinding against Dibdin's criticisms, Lesné was himself an amateur binder of considerable merit. LESNé'S BINDINGS ARE OF EXTREME RARITY, not only on the market but also in public and private collections.
