Last page with printer's gryphon trademark. in Latin. Sebastian Gryphius (1493 - 1556) was born in Swabia and learned the printer's trade from his father. He then went to Venice to continue learning the trade, then to Lyon to open a printing house on behalf of a Venetian firm. His brother Franz became a printer in Paris and Johann in Venice. Initially he published books on law and administration, then turned to publishing classics in Greek, Latin and Hebrew. He was famed for his accuracy as well as beautiful types, for he not only knew printing, he was literate in many of the languages in which he was working. By the 1540's he was hailed as the "Prince of the Lyon book trade." (as quoted in Wikipedia, accessed 7 Jan. 2019). Gryphius later became known for printing "suspect" texts and sheltered authors accused of being heretics. Addison, Joseph. The Free-Holder, or Political Essays. London: Printed for D. Midwinter and J. Tonson, 1716. 16mo, full vellum binding, marbled endpapers, 311pp, errata. Collection of 55 essays, many concerning rebellion. Addison (1672 - 1719) is best known as being the co-founder, with Richard Steele of The Spectator Magazine. A prolific writer, The Free-Holder was his last publication. He also wrote "Cato, a Tragedy," cited by many as inspiration for the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution. Condition: Claudiani with waterstain on front matter, previous owners' identifications on free front endpapers; one early owner has made extensive margin notes (including numbering lines of poetry). Spine with amateur repair, both boards separated. Second has bumping to corners, lower right severely. Surface soil. Internally clean and tight.
