LONDON PARKS - LARWOOD, Jacob. The Story of the London Parks by Jacob Larwood inlaid and illustrated with numerous extra illustrations including portraits, views, costumes, caricatures and other engravings, illustrative of the manners and customs of the Times comprised in the volumes . London: Francis Harvey, 1871. 2 volumes expanded to 8, 2°(415 x 300mm.). Printed additional titles dated 1871, text of original 8° edition inlaid to size, EXTRA ILLUSTRATED with 317 engraved and mezzotint portraits, 2 hand-coloured, 271 engraved plates including costume, fashion and caricatures, both social, equestrian and military, 136 hand-coloured, 65 engraved and aquatint views, 30 hand-coloured, several folding, 5 early ninteenth Century watercolours, several printed broadsheets and four other part works related to the London bound in (most plates trimmed and inlaid to size, many with pencil annotations). Green half morocco, spines lettered in gilt, by Riviere & Son, uncut, original cloth binding of the 8° edition bound in (joints and corners rubbed). Sold not subject to return. A special extra-illustrated copy of the 8° edition of Larwood's London Parks with additional titles. This enlarged edition appears to predate the 8° edition published by J.C.Hotten in 1872. The collection of prints gives an interesting insight into the social life based around the Royal Parks from the mid-18th Century. The plates include: 45 mezzotint portraits by Sayer, Faber, Carrington Bowles, Woodburn, Parker, of English Kings and nobility including Henry VIII, James I, James II, William Pitt George Prince of Wales, Spring, Summer, Chloe, Wilhelmina Charlotta Princess of Wales and Augusta Princess Dowager of Wales. Broadsheets include: An Excellent Ballad of the Lord Mohun and Duke Hamilton ; James MaCleane, the Gentleman Highwayman at the Bar , Sept 29 1750; An exact view of the Triumphant Arch in the Green Park for fireworks, 1748; ticket for the Royal fireworks of 1749; Description of the..Fire-Work intended for peace, 1748 , with other minor works: Map of the proposed plan of Hyde Park and 25pp text by John Gwynn, 1766; Charles Sidley. The Mulberry-Garden. A Comedy , 1675; Thomas Lyttleton. The Vauxhall Affray; or the Macaronies Defeated , 1773; E.P.Philocosm. The Art of Dressing the Hair , Bath, 1770. The engraved and aquatint views include numerous coloured and uncoloured views of the Royal Palaces from Pine's Royal Residences , views of the parks by Bowles and Carver, Stadler, Kip, Sayer, Palser, Ackermann, Virtue, Highmore and Tinney. The engraved plates including fashion and costume plates by Dighton and others, caricatures by Bunbury, Darly, Bowen, Carrington Bowles and Fore, the 5 watercolour drawings comprising 3 carricatures of carriage rides in the park, portrait of George, Prince of Wales, dated 1803, and a view of Major Follets Riding School.
