MAC-SWINY, Eugene. Tombeaux des Princes, Grand Capitaines et Autres Hommes Illustres, Qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne. [Paris: Basan, ?1737.] 2° (542 x 356mm). 20 double-page engravings, and three smaller engravings. (Soiled mostly on margins, a few plates browned, repairs to a few margins.) Recent half-calf preserving 18th-century marbled paper boards (extremities rubbed, soiled). VERY RARE (Cohen-De Ricci 670). Not in the British Library or the Bibliothèque nationale de France; the Catalogue Collectif de France and RLG record no copy. A fine suite of 20 large double-page engravings after paintings from the collection of the Duke of Richmond by Pittoni, Valeriani, Monti, Murando, Boucher, Creti, Vanloo, and others; those relating to Isaac Newton and Charles Sackville include a folding abridgment of, respectively, Fontenelle and Prior's eulogies. Pittoni's 'Allegorical Monument to Sir Isaac Newton' celebrates the famous prismatic experiment demonstrating the heterogeneity of sunlight. The suite also includes John Adam Dick's lavish advert, a double-page engraving for The Great Red House, his hotel in Frankfurt.
