Title: Manuscript Bond for Clarksville, Tennessee, Colored Church Author: Woods, D.M. Place: Clarksville, Tennessee Publisher: Date: June 16th 1856 Description: 32 lines, in ink, on recto of sheet of lined white paper, wth 10 lines on verso cancelling the bond. 10¼x7¾. Rare documentary record of land being purchased in Clarksville, Tennessee prior to the Civil War for the purposes of building a church for African Americans. It was never built, and the earliest Black church in Clarksville seems to have been built in 1866. The document reads in part, "Articles of agreement made between D.M. Woods of the one fact and the City of Clarksville of the other fact... Woods has this day sold to sd. City of Clarksville to hold in trust for the benefit of the colored or african church a certain lot of ground in Clarksville..." The cancellation on the verso begins, "The within Bond was canceled December 1st 1857..." Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling & wear, darkening along creases, else good to very good.
