Marlene Dumas Over Lyken Lopen (Over Dead Bodies) 1993 Oil on canvas. 35 3/8 x 27 1/2 in. (90 x 70 cm). Signed and titled “Marlene Dumas Over Lyken Lopen” on the stretcher.
Provenance Galerie Zeno X, Antwerp Exhibited Antwerp, Galerie Zeno X, Give the people what they want, March 8 – May 2, 1993; London, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Marlene Dumas July 28 – September 19, 1993; Munich, Kunstverein; Innsbruck, Taxispalais; Baden Baden, Staatliche Kunsthalle, The Wounded Diva, 25 June - 27 August, 2000; Tokyo, Museum of Contemporary Art, Marlene Dumas Broken-White, April 14 – July 15, 2007. Catalogue Essay Dark, deep and uncanny, Marlene Dumas’ Over Lyken Lopen, is an exemplary work by the artist. Confronting the subject matter she regulary visits - the female figure, Dumas presents a work that is loaded with meaning and possible interpretations. In Over Lyken Lopen, which translates in English to "Over Dead Bodies", Dumas brings the subject matter of murder into play. The scene depicted appears to be that of a young naked girl standing above a dead man with one hand behind her back, possibly holding a knife. Dumas has frozen in time a moment that suggests a possible narrative without giving away too much information, leaving one to ask the questions of "how?" and "why?". Dumas leaves multipule possibilities as to the image’s source, placing the viewer within a graphic storyline, yet with no clear references. Read More
