Translated by Henry Hexham. Amsterdam: H. Hondius and J. Jansonnius 1636. 2 vols., folio, 476 x 312 mm. (18¾ x 12 3/8 in.), contemporary calf, rebacked; modern folding cloth cases; text and maps on guards, dampstaining to preliminary text and last 26 maps in vol. 1, about 5 maps with short tears affecting image, 4 or 5 maps with minor short fold breaks, marginal repairs (mainly patches to lower gutter margins) to about 60 maps, most in vol. 2, and to engraved title and first few text leaves in vol. 2, about 10 maps with slight wear along center fold, creasing or wrinkling to 46 maps, slight browning along gutters of many maps from acidic guards, especially in vol. 1, four maps with small abraded areas to engraved surface, map 1:59 (Lower Palatinate) severely stained, creased and marginally repaired (possibly supplied from another copy), maps 2:13 and 2:74 (Flandria Gallica and Piedmont) creased, torn and repaired, 2nd map of Holland (2:16) cropped, 2 maps with shoulder-notes to text on rectos obscured by guards, 2 lines text on p. 409 in vol. 2 covered by patch, some spotting to upper margins . Half-title, engraved titles with letterpress overslips, double-page engraved portrait of Mercator and Hondius, 114 engraved mapsheets, several with more than one map, including the Hondius-Jansson world map (Shirley 336), in its first state. Maps 2:25 (Tranyslvania), 2:60 (Tuscany) and 2:63 (Valencia) with captions varying slightly from Koeman's description. Koeman II, Me 41a; Phillips 449. First English-language edition of Henricus Hondius and Joannes Janssonius's revision of Mercator's atlas, published in 1630 as a response to the growing threat of their competitor Willem Blaeu. 22 maps in this edition relate to the Americas, including two of five maps that appear here for the first time: Parma/Placentia, Modena, Aethiopia, New England and Mexico (Koeman nos. 359-363). Provenance : Thomas Cookes Winford of Glashampton, Baronet, Worcester, armorial bookplate dated 1702 on front flyleaf of vol. 1; 18th c. purchase and library shelf numbers on front free endpapers.
