MEROVINGIAN FRANKISH GOLD AND GARNET SCALLOP PENDANT Circa 6th-7th century AD. A garnet and gold pendant comprising a D-shaped garnet cut with radiating ridges to resemble a scallop, set within a gold collet; the pendant formed with a granulated border, plain backplate and ribbed loop. Gold and garnet,1.59 grams, 16 mm Very fine condition, complete. Extremely rare. Provenance Found Hargrave, Northamptonshire, before 1994 (recorded under Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference DENO-859998). Literature A very similar pendant formed part of a 'royal princess's' grave discovered at Loftus, Kirkleatham, Yorkshire in 2005. Publication of the cemetery is still in process.
