L'écrivain commença de peindre et de dessiner au cours des années 1920 et présenta sa première exposition en 1927. Il ne cessa plus jusqu'à sa mort de tracer des portraits et de composer ces " dreamscapes " aux couleurs vives rayonnant de sa joie de vivre coutumière. Cette pratique artistique, sans jamais prendre le pas sur ses travaux d'écriture, compta néanmoins beaucoup pour lui, comme il l'affirma à son ami l'écrivain Lawrence Durrel : " Am painting on and off and really improving - in my own queer fashion. I wish I could give up writing altogether and paint. Such fun ! And something to look at and enjoy when the day is done. " (lettre du 25 octobre 1964). Henry Miller a d'ailleurs consacré un livre entier à son activité de peintre, To paint is to love again (1960) : " I prefer to ease out by saying I'm not a painter. I hardly even dare call myself an amateur. Yet I do paint. And now and then I knock out what might be called a picture. Perhaps the clue to this ambivalent attitude lies in the fact that I turn to painting when I can no longer write. Painting refreshes and restores me. It enables me to forget that I am temporarily unable to write. So I paint when the reservoir replenishes itself. This is not always the case, however. Occasionaly, I will paint when I have done my stint of writing for the day. That usually means that I'm writing well, easily, have energy to spare. Then it's touch and go. Something to be over with in a few minutes, an hour at most [...]. I may in fact become so intoxicated with my manner success as to abandon the writing and go on painting for days.
