Baltimore: Published for the Editor by E. J. Cole, 1821. iv, (5)-228 pp. Bottom edge trimmed Extracts in Prose and Verse by a Lady of Maryland. First Editions. Miscellaneous Selections and Original Pieces is a commonplace anthology compiled by Marylander Elizabeth Chase (1767-1840), the sister of Samuel Chase, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The contents, from both American and English sources, range from brief biographical sketches of other writers, excepts from Samuel Richardson, William Gilpin, commentary by Chase on Edmund Burke, a brief prose piece about the horrors of slavery - presumably by the editor, but unsigned - and several poems by an “Edgar” which have in the past been hopefully but speciously attributed to the young Edgar Allan Poe. The second title, though only present in its second volume, is quite similar to the first in tone and contents. The two volumes were apparently bound as is in the 19th century. Condition: Title-page of first volume defective with "Miscellaneous Selections and" torn away and replaced a blank; somewhat foxed; early ink notations on title-page of the second volume; good to very good. Item#: 348643 Headline: Elizabeth Chase Miscellaneous Selections 1821
