MISSAL, use of Sarum. Missale ad vsum insignis ecclesie Sarisburiensis , Paris: apud Guillelmum Merlin [typis Joannis Amazeur], 1555. 3 parts in one volume, 2° (345 x 225). Printed in red and black, the two leaves of the Canon Missae (t4&5) PRINTED ON VELLUM with full-page illustrations of the Crucifixion and God the Father, large woodcut of Mary I's arms and St George and the Dragon on title, large woodcut on a1 r within a border, numerous woodcuts and initials in the text, woodcut music on 4 staves, device on last page (the 2 Canon Missae woodcuts crudely hand-coloured and very affected by show-through, many lower margins in quires second C-G defective, all repaired and with no loss of text). Contemporary Oxford blindstamped calf over wooden boards, 2 roll-tool borders round sides enclosing a panel with 2 other roll-tools shaped like an 'X' (rebacked, spine worn, upper cover becoming loose, lacks clasps). Provenance : the Jesuits at Louvain (17th-century inscription on title); H. Liddon, 1885 (signature). STC 16217; Adams L1214.
