After seeing Moran's work, Hayden invited Moran to accompany him on his 1871 geological survey of Yellowstone. The resulting work was an astounding collection of paintings, one of which was purchased by Congress in 1872 for $10,000, and they helped illustrate the unique and majestic nature of the area, smoothing the way for Yellowstone to become the first National Park the following year. Prang's collection of Moran's work was produced utlizing as many as fixty-six layers of carefully registered lithographic stones to create an extraordinary depth of color. According to Bennett, "hand work could never give the effect of perspective and distance achieved in the towering scenes reproduced here."
