Letters addressed to Prince Eugène as Viceroy of Italy, the first regarding the composition of a regiment of Italian guard, also with proposals for light artillery and cavalry, with further details 'Il faudrait voir ce qu'on penserait à Milan de cette organisation .... Cette garde ainsi organisée on laisserait insensiblement dépérir la première'; the second on financial matters and the protocol for the ceremonial of the Viceroy; the third about the Italian guard, instructing Eugène to print and publish Napoleon's decree referring to its formation; the fourth also on financial matters, the billeting of officers at Mantua, and the need to investigate the claim of the municipality to be the creditor of the state for one million [francs]. Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824), the son of the Empress Joséphine by her marriage to Alexander de Beauharnais, was appointed Viceroy of Italy on 7 June 1805. The victory of Austerlitz on 2 December 1805, reuniting the kingdom of Italy with the Veneto and Istria, increased his authority and in January 1806 Napoleon adopted him as his son. (8)
