Before joining the Barbizon School and becoming one of the French landscape painters to paint from nature, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña was first influenced by the Romantic Movement. Fascinated by Victor Hugo and the iconography of an exotic Middle East, he painted many Orientalist paintings that are part fantasy, part reality. This portrait of a Turkish woman is a perfect example of this. Interrupted in her work as she is sitting on a bench with her face bent down, she looks the painter in the eyes. Her sumptuous clothes and their colors give rise to a majestic portrayal, in which all of the composition's light focuses on her. The still darkness of the garden provides a contrast to the young woman's position. With one hand on the bench and one foot forward, she seems ready to get up to ask the viewer to join her. By rendering this movement, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña opens the doors to his imagination.
