Title: Original drawings and watercolors for Oliver Twist and The Human Comedy Author: Freeman, Don Place: Publisher: Date: [1938] and [1943] Description: 19 pieces of art, including: 4 litho crayon and ink drawings on paper or board for The Human Comedy. Includes 2 small ones (approximately 8x10") and 2 larger ones (approximately 10x12"). One signed by Freeman, two initialed by him, 1 with the Estate stamp signature. * 15 ink drawings, 11 with watercolor, on paper. Illustrations for Oliver Twist, 9 of which measure 32.7x22.8 cm. (12¾x9"). The remaining are a bit smaller. The illustrations show various characters such as Fagin, Nancy, and Oliver himself. A few are initialed, 4 are signed, and a few are stamped with the Estate stamp signature. Don Freeman (1908-1978) was an American artist who moved to New York from California in his early twenties. He was the author of such children's classics as Corduroy and Pet of the Met. He also illustrated for various authors. Included in this collection are some sketches for William Saroyan's The Human Comedy, and some very fine finished watercolor and ink artwork for the 100th Anniversary publication of Oliver Twist. The 100th anniversary publication deal fell through, and these illustrations for the book were not published until 1994. Provenance: The Estate of Don Freeman Lot Amendments Condition: Near fine.
