OTA JANECEK (1919–1996) The Walk of the Astronauts Starting price: 400 000 CZK (15 094 EUR) Hammer price: 650 000 CZK (24 528 EUR) Description dimensions: 114 x 195 cm (h x w) period: 1960, Bohemia This large canvas is a typical example of Janeček’s work from the late 1950s and early 1960s, a period when he focused on breaking up the surface and inner structure of the painting. Almost returning to the principles of Cubism, an area he experimented with in the 1940s, here Janeček transforms the shapes and forms into structured fields of color. Exhibited at “Paintings from 1959–1961,” a collected exhibition of the artist’s work at Špála Gallery in Prague in 1962, under the title “Astronauts on Parade”. The painting was also captured in a photograph that Josef Sudek took at Janeček’s studio and later published in “Pražské ateliéry” (Prague Studios, published by NČSVU, Prague, 1961, p. 34). Works from this period only rarely appear on the art market. The painting is from the artist’s family estate. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated “Ota Janeček 1960” on bottom right.
