Pair: Sergeant Robert Allen Royal Waggon Train Military General Service 1793-1814, 7 clasps, Sahagun & Benevente, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, Orthes, Toulouse (Robert Allen Serjeant, Royal Waggon Train); Waterloo 1815 (Serjeant Robert Allen Royal Waggon Train) steel clip and ring suspension, very fine (2) £2200-2600 Footnote Robert Allen was born in the Parish of Islington, London. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for service with the Royal Regiment of Waggon Train at Croydon on 4 March 1806, aged 17 years. He first attained the rank of Serjeant in October 1810 but was reduced to Private in January 1813. Regaining his rank in February 1814, he was again reduced to Private in December 1818. In September 1826 he was for a for a third time advanced to Serjeant. He was discharged on 17 June 1833 as a consequence of the disbandment of the Regiment. His service papers record that he served ‘in Spain: Four months; Peninsula: Three years and two months; France: Three years and a half; Portugal: Fourteen months and three weeks’. They also record his service in the Waterloo campaign. At his discharge it was stated, ‘... his conduct has been praise-worthy, and has always been distinguished for his honesty and sobriety, and the zealous discharge of his duty as a Non Commissioned Officer, having for upwards of three years had the charge of a detachment of men and horses on a post of considerable importance on the Royal Military Canal at Hythe, which he conducted with entire satisfaction’. Sold with copied discharge papers and roll extracts.
