PALISSY, Bernard de (ca. 1510-ca. 1590). Oeuvres...revues sur les exemplaires de la Bibliotheque du Roi. Edited by Barthelemy Faujas de Saint Fond and Nicolas Gobet. Paris: Rualt, 1777. 4 o (267 x 210mm). Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. (Leaf pi2 containing dedication [pp.vii-viii] excised, minor foxing and light dampstains to early quires). Original marbled paper over pasteboard, uncut and partly unopened (covers rubbed). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, second issue, with the dedication to Benjamin Franklin and the engraved portrait of the dedicatee excised from the preliminaries (as usual). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed in ink on half-title by the principal editor, Faujas de Saint-Fond (1743-1819): "donnee par faujas de st fond a son ami [name inked out]." This early collected edition includes some wrongly attributed works. Norman 1630 ("It was originally intended to be dedicated to Benjamin Franklin the newly arrived United States ambassador to France...but the dedication and accompanying portrait...were suppressed before publication, and exist in only a handful of copies").
