Paris: 1788-1793. 6 vols, comprising 5 text vols 4° (258 x 200mm) and one atlas vol. 2° (330 x 245mm). With half-titles. Large engraved folding map, and 107 engraved plates. (Some spotting mainly in the text vols, occasional soiling, a few short marginal tears.) Contemporary diced russia, sides framed in gilt, spines gilt in compartments (one board detached, most joints split but just holding, some spine-caps chipped, atlas vol. rebacked preserving original spine). Currer was 'England's earliest female bibliophile' (De Ricci), whose library and collection placed her 'at the head of all female collectors in Europe' (Dibdin). Her library was surpassed only by those of Earl Spencer, the Duke of Devonshire and the Duke of Buckingham. Under the patronage of Catherine II, Pallas took charge of the scientific expedition whose initial task was to make astronomical observations in Siberia. Six years of travel took him as far as the Chinese border in the east and the Caucasus in the south. His discoveries and extraordinary hardships are documented in this work, first published in St. Petersburg, 1771-76.
