PALLAS, Peter Simon (1741-1811). Flora Rossica: seu Stirpium Imperii Rossici per Europam et Asiam indigenarum descriptiones et icones . St. Petersburg: J.J. Weitbrecht, 1784-1788. Volume I [all published] in 2, text in 2 parts, 2° (500 x 300mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece by G.I. Bugreew and 100 (of 101) hand-coloured numbered plates after K.F. Knappe with captions in Latin and Russian. (Lacking plate 13, frontispiece slightly soiled and with repairs at margins.) 20th-century half morocco and mottled boards, spines gilt, uncut. Provenance : Johann Hus (bookplate). The plant genus Pallasia and the Crimean pine Pinus Pallasiana were named after Pallas who was associated with the development of Russian science for almost forty years. His interest in plants was strongly linked to their economic potential. Although he had intended the Flora Rossica to be a 2-volume work, part two took five years to follow part one, and the political and financial difficulties of bringing out a second volume became too great. In 1831, another 25 plates were issued without text, surviving in very few copies. Catherine II is depicted on the frontispiece vignette. Arnold Arboretum p. 535; Dunthorne 221; Great Flower Books (1990), p. 124; Lack Ein Garten Eden 40; Nissen BBI 1482; Stafleu and Cowan 7227. (2)
