PAUL VON FRANKEN 1818-1884 A settlement said to be on the Kura river in Georgia Signed, oil on canvas, 43 x 58,5 cm The late romantic German painter Paul Von Franken trained at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts, spent the period from 1842 to 1845 in Brussels and Antwerp, and exhibited at the Dresden Academy in 1846. He moved to Tbilisi in 1853 travelling through Latvia, the home of his wife Helene Korber, St. Petersburg and Moscow on the way. He remained in Georgia until 1860, when for unknown reasons he left his wife to return to Dusseldforf, where he continued to paint views of Georgia and the Caucasus until his death in 1884. Just before he died, he invited his wife to come back to him, and after his death she returned to the Caucasus with many of his paintings, where they were dispersed in local collections. Their daughter, Helen von Franken, married the famous German academic and writer on the Caucasus Carl von Hahn.
