FIRST EDITION of the Sentences by Petrus Lombardus with commentary by Bonaventure. Petrus, an Italian theologian, was made Bishop of Paris in 1159, the year before he died. This work consists of theological questions posed by Lombard, divided into 4 books: the first book considers God and the doctrine of the Trinity; the second concerns the Creation; the third deals with Christ and the Christian religion; and the fourth comprises questions on religious and moral duties. There is an additional volume of tables, probably published later, compiled by the editor, Johann Beckenhub. Beckenhub originated from Mainz, studied in Heidelberg and worked as an editor in Strassburg, Nuremberg and Bamberg amongst other places. In the preliminaries to the Sentences Beckenhub has included correspondence between himself and Nicolaus Tinctoris, a theologian from Bamberg, in which he names Anton Koberger as printer; Koberger did not print a colophon in this edition.
