PETTUS, John (1613-90). Fodinae Regales. Or the History, Laws and Places of the Chief Mines and Mineral Works in England, Wales, and the English Pale in Ireland. As also of the Mint and Mony. With a Clavis Explaining some difficult Words relating to Mines, &c. London: Printed by H. L. and R. B. for Thomas Basset, 1670. Small folio (292 x 190mm). Engraved portrait of the author in the second state signed "W. Sherwin sculpsit", initials, headpieces, engraved illustrations of the "The Arms of the Society of the Mines Royal" and "The Arms of the Society for the Mineral and Battery Works", the first with an explanatory note pasted beneath [as usual], 2 engraved plates titled "Comsumlock Hill" and "The Roman Works", each with letterpress "key" on versos, "Corrigenda" leaf at end (a few very short marginal tears without loss, some light mainly marginal staining and spotting, [?]printer's ink stain at upper margin of M1, not affecting letters). Contemporary calf (quite heavily rubbed, joints splitting). Provenance: old monogram [?]"J.R." on front blanks; J. C. Owen, Wrexham (modern incription in blue pencil at upper margin of title, with a note in the same hand beneath the author's name and some faint underlining to passages of the text). FIRST EDITION of a work that was undertaken at the request of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Cumberland. The author was deputy governor of the royal mines in England and Wales, serving both Charles I and II. RARE. Duveen p. 468; Goldsmiths' 1930; Hoover 634; Kress 1270.
