Italy, 18th century.] 4 o (285 x 210 mm). 160 leaves with 160 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS of marble or agate each approximately 5 inches in diameter with caption identification each within a yellow circular frame within a black ink border many signed within the border (6 with cracking or tiny chips to black ink). 19th-century red half morocco and marbled boards (some minor rubbing). Provenance : J. Noel Paton (1821-1901) Scottish pre-Raphaelite and fairy painter (owner's name on front free endpaper dated 1853). An unpublished album of 160 watercolor drawings of various "stone examples" mostly polished marble and agate including: Breccia Antica; Breccia Orientale; Amethyst; Cipollino Orientale; Agate; Lapis lazuli and many others. Piccini, an engraver of medals and an antiquarian draughtsman in Rome collaborated with with Francesco Bartoli and Francesco de' Ficoroni He is best known for documentation of the archaeological excavations at the necropolis of Vigna Moroni, on the Via Appia.
