Portrait of Wilkie Collins After a Photograph by Napoleon Sarony Author: Place: Unknown Publisher: Unknown photographer Date: Ca. 1875-1890? Description: Cream Cabinet Card mount 6½x4¼" Wilkie Collins photograph taken from a portrait photograph by Napoleon Sarony William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and playwright known for The Woman in White (1859) and The Moonstone (1868). The last has been called the first modern English detective novel. Sarony was particularly pleased with his photographs of Wilkie Collins, whom he captured in a very informal pose in 1874. Collins himself seems to have been no less pleased when the pictures were developed and wrote to Sarony “You have taken just the sort of photograph I like. Those taken of me over here are perfect libels, but I feel like giving your pictures to all my friends.” Lot Amendments Condition: Small bend to card mount; else very good. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
