Campbell’s Soup was the preeminent emblem of a new world order’s consumerism and ubiquitous branding. Andy Warhol knew that cultural landmarks became most enduring once everyone took ownership. In one of his very first exhibitions, Warhol, like his abstractionist contemporaries, presented floating and vertical, all-over compositions of horizontal and brightly colored bands; Andy’s subjects, however, took shape as soup cans, a form that everyone understands.
