Property from an Important Private Collection Henri Matisse Tobogan, plate 5 from Jazz portfolio 1947 Pochoir in colors, on Arches paper folded (as issued), with full margins, I. 12 3/4 x 11 1/2 in (32.4 x 29.2 cm); S. 16 1/2 x 25 1/2 in (41.9 x 64.8 cm) (unfolded) from copy 81 of 250 (there were also 20 hors commerce copies and a portfolio edition of 100), published by Tériade, Paris,, the pink attenuated, pale mat and time staining, a few pale pinpoint spots of soiling in the margins, otherwise in very good condition, framed.

Known for his lyrical, expressive line and bold coloration, Matisse worked in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Originally a member of the Fauvism movement of the start of the twentieth century, the next half-century found Matisse forging his own style characterized by spontaneous and deceptively simple draftsmanship and inventive vibrant color.
