PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (after 83-ca 168 AD). Geographiae Universiae . Edited by Giovanni Magnini. Cologne: Petrus Keschedt, 1597. 2 parts in one volume, 4 o (219 x 163 mm). Hand-colored engraved folding map of the world frontispiece, hand-colored engraved vignette title-pages to both parts, 63 engraved maps (extra-illustrated with 2 small folding maps), hand-colored woodcut diagrams, head- and tail-pieces, and ornamental initials (frontispiece and vignette title-page to part one repaired in the gutter without affecting images). (Browned, some spotting, a few marginal tears and pale stains.) Modern calf (scuffed at extremities, joints starting). Provenance : Ant. V. J. Spreingorst(?) (inscription at foot of title-page dated "Prague Anno 97"); near contemporary scholarly annotations to preliminaries and Magnini's "Commentaria, et Annotationes"; Kais. University and Landes Bibliothek (library ink stamps on verso of vignette title-page to Part One). Second edition of Ptolomy's Geographia edited by Giovanni Magnini which was first published in Venice 1596. The maps are exact copies of Girolamo Porro's maps used for the first edition and later Venetian editions. This is the issue without the colophon at the end of the "Index" (corresponding with a copy at Harvard). The double-page world map, bound here as the frontispiece, is a smaller version of Rumbold Mercator's which appeared ten years earlier; later it was used at Arnhem and Amsterdam up to 1642.
